Former acupuncturist and massage therapist, I loved to do flea markets, find old furniture and give them a second life. I restored this furniture for my friends and family or for me. One day I told myself that the furniture I restore, I wish I knew how to make them . In 1998, I am back on to school to do a diploma in cabinetmaker.
So in 2001, I created L’Essence du Bois, a craft cabinetry specializes in the restoration and creation of furniture and personal household objects. Meanwhile, I got involved in my community as curator invited by the City of Quebec for » Cabinetmakers Secrets » on Maison Hamel-Bruneau ( 2006) as Vice President of Table of trades Art Council of Culture (2009-2012) ; as a speaker at the National Museum of Fine Arts of Quebec at the event MeublÉmouvant exhibition (2011); Vice President of the Board of the training center and consulting Crafts (2009-2012) and ; Member of the Board of a school in cabinet which I was executive director from May 2008 to January 2013 .
During this mandate, I proceeded to the mounting of the specifications in the implementation of the first business incubator for cabinetmaker in Canada, and mentoring to enable graduates in December that the entrepreneurial spirit to start their business, to develop their clientele and their niche at an affordable cost (2011). I also collaborated in the development and implementation of the fund initiated by the Table of the Council for Culture Arts and Crafts, to provide access to credit, accompaniment and services adapted to needs and projects of artists and artisans in crafts (2010).
Also, since I attach great importance to the transmission of knowledge, I chose writing to perform this transmission. It is in this context that I wrote nearly 300 articles in the field of cabinetmaking published between 2000 and 2013, launched three books: terminological dictionary woodworking, finishing yesterday’s furniture in today in 2006, and the Table of wood here and elsewhere used in the manufacture of furniture, in 2008. Two other volumes are in preparation: Quebec Cabinetmaking, 400 years of history (working title) , to be published in 2015 a furniture history (working title) , published in 2016, a coécriture with art historian Dany Quine .
All these experiences have been very profitable to me, but they also allowed me to realize that two very important needs at home were not adequately met : the need to create with my hands and the need for autonomy .
So I chose to return to my « essence » in May 2013. I asked myself the question: with the expertise I have, how do I respond to a need in a niche that is not developed right now?
As I found that more and more people are doing business with cremation and funeral companies for prearranged, I started watching what was offered as products not requiring industrial manufacturing and meeting the criteria for aesthetics , quality and reasonably priced . Force was to note the lack of cremation quality wood products on the market, as a value-added integration marquetry and photography. The idea was found! It now remains to confirm. So I did a market study that confirmed my intuition. I developed my business plan with the help of Quebec Loan Fund and the CLD de Québec.
At 55, I give more time for reflection. For me, age brings wisdom, hindsight, but also many contacts and the development of human relations skills essential to succeed in this I do. I want to create a company that gives meaning to my life and contributing to society and when one is carried by passion, weeks often too short.
